The Secret of Kells

I am absolutely loving everything I see about this film. I don't know how, but I very much want to see this film. Heck, I don't even know if it will be distributed in the US. Here are three sequences of it on YouTube. I don't understand French, but I understand what's going on. Certainly a real testament to the storytelling involved.

I love the sense of design, detail, suggestion and scale here...

This sequence is just amazing to me...

The imagination in the animation in this one is just fantastic -- in the truest sense of that word.

I don't know how much this film needs to make worldwide to break a profit, but I sure hope that it does because we need more animated films like this.

The film was partially animated in Belgium, so we have the luck it was also distributed in Belgium. It occurred to me that 2D-animation has this touch of magic that 3D hasn't (yet). I loved every bit of this movie, the animation was tops, the story was great and the music was wow! :) Looking forward to the next productions of those Irish heroes!

Check out his blog as well! :) And find out what Pixar thinks about his film

This is really wonderful looking. It looks so ethereal and of really well crafted. I've been following your blog for a while Keith, and I know you're interested in animations that look unusual or at least try to break away from traditional 3d. I completed an animation in April that you might find interesting. Let me know what you think.

I envy everyone who has gotten to see it already. Over at blogofkells they had mentioned that even though their European distribution is backed by Disney, there's still no sign of a North American release. Hopefully, there'll be a Region 1 DVD release so we can buy it.

I really can't wait to see this movie, although I'll probably have to wait until the DVD gets released at home and have someone ship it over to me.

I don't think I've been so entranced by a film in a language I have no knowledge of. Would love to see this.

Hi Keith,
Yeah it's a great film - I've seen it twice now on the big screen. Well worth checking out if it comes to town. The director works at www.cartoonsaloon.ie - they have some other nice looking projects in the works too - most notably Song of the Sea.

Saw it at Cartoon Movie in Lyon this year. It was great. Great style, great atmosphere, great story. Until the end when they messed everything up and the story collapsed.

*Spoilers ahead*

They build the whole story around this magic of illuminating books and having mystical creatures in the movie, but in the end they don't follow through with it. It is just a plain book and there is no magic. It just ends with the old bishop looking at the book and its nice illuminated pages. End of story.
This ending left a very sour aftertaste in my mouth and ruined the whole film for me. Otherwise it was a great movie.

At the very end of the first clip she says "Open your eyes, and I will tell you my name." She then says her name, and says, "Here is my forest." Very neat.
