I won't even bother linking to it. I found it too banal to even comprehend. It didn't even do a good job of parlaying any indepth social commentary. "Let's make a bunch of cartoon logos play out a hundred bad cop film cliche's. And add an earthquake! Yeah! Awesome!" That's about as deep as it went. Maybe I'm just a grumpy old man...

well said. What are your opinions on the other 3 films?? French Roast is my vote.
i couldn't agree more. it was mind-numbing and frantic. french roast was also MY choice....
I'm a young, naive, ignorant, all-accepting, apologetic college student, and I've been saying the exact same things since I saw it a few weeks ago. I couldn't believe it when I heard it. I wanted French Roast to get it, but I thought it was going to go to Nick, but Logorama? Bloody hell...
Our university makes better films.
I totally agree as well!! french Roast should have won
Hi all,
I haven't seen Logorama and heard good things about it. But as Keith pointed out, if it lacks a social commentary what's the point of that show off ?
I read that the directors are working in advertising, if they didn't put any distance, well that's even worse 'cause this would be some celebration of the worst evil of all time :
Capitalism.
Is that ok for an artist to say that ?
Hopefully I'm on a progressive blog... elsewhere this would just be different.
Peace.
I was expecting 'The Lady and the Reaper' or Wallace and Gromit in 'A Matter of Loaf and Death' to win.
I am shocked too coz I saw Logorama few weeks ago and gave it average rating I didnt know it was for Oscars. Yesterday I realized it was Oscar nominee and actually won :| I was expecting French Roast or Lady and the Reaper.
I watched about 60 seconds of logorama a few weeks ago before turning it off. Glad to know I didn't miss anything. Mystified that it won.
I think you have to look at the lineup. None of the films were particularly amazing so it was easy for Logo to stand out. And yes I saw all the nominations.
I stopped paying attention to the Oscars a long time ago. They mean nothing (to me anyways).
Yep, I expected Wallace and Gromit to win for the wrong reasons, but hoped for the Lady and the Reaper. Logorama was way off the list... in retrospect anything that actually has any meaning will not sit well with at least one member of a committee. This should be an inspiration to all independent animators to believe in themsleves and their own visions and the opinions of the reviewers and critics.
correction of above:
"and NOT the opinions of the reviewers and critics"
Did all the 'logos' pay for sponosorship? maybe that's why it won??
Glad to see you blogging again Kieth...:]
In my opinion Cat Piano, which for some reason didn't make the cut but should have when compared to Logorama and that Granny film, should have won.
Agreed. I was pulling for Lady and the Reaper or French Roast, though any of the other films were better. WTF academy?
oh wow, i thought i was the only one who felt it was contrived, serendipitously planned, and un-clever... good to know!
ugh, I completely agree.
Incidentally, am I the only one who didn't like 'Waltz with Bashir'?
woah, wait, did logorama win? gosh
yea, I was disappointed and quite surprised when it won. It was somewhat clever but no more. Somewhat clever films deserve somewhat decent hits on youtube. The other shorts did not deserve to be beat by such a subpar foe. boo.
Does anyone have a link to anything more than the trailer? I hadn't heard of it until the Oscars, but the trailer looks interesting.
What the hell, are you guys insane? Logorama is a huge leap forward for animated films in terms of content and innovation. A concept that's never been done before and something that's truly original in terms of delivery and style. What I've seen millions of times before are films like french roast and granny o'grimm, nothing new, innovative, or fresh in them for me. I was thrilled to see logorama, something tongue in cheek, irony, social significance, cleverness, and tons of panache. I'm glad an original film like this got recognition over the same old same old films other animators like you guys seem so bent on churning out.
haha, great counter view. good to get another perspective
French Roast was real good. but i liked the granny-reaper one better.
Logorama makes a statement, but its kind of a simplistic message, but maybe that what simple people need? i personally detest ads in movies.
If we wanted to see a good animated film that is truly funny, ironic and tongue in cheeky then I think we all missed out when Cordell Barker's "Runaway" didn't get nominated.
As for my favorite this year- none of them, really. There's some cleverness in the execution in a few of the films, but none of them felt like "Wow" to me. Although I never did see the W&G one, so maybe that was good. I'd heard it was kinda same-as-it-ever-was.
Thanks for saying that Keith. Totally agree. On second viewing I did find some enjoyment out of hunting for logos but overall it's a bit too adolescent.
I follow Marks opinion here.
I watched all the nominated films and I even jumped forward in some of them because I had the feeling that I've seen the very same hundreds of times before.
Logorama did not fell into that category because of the reasons Mark mentions above. By far the most creative approach in a overall weak competition( I'd even claim there was plenty of student animation which was far more exciting in the last year).
Wow, I didn't realise that Logorama had actually won the award. It really wasn't anything special, at all. Even the voice acting, for me, was rather terrible. The other nominees, from what I've seen, were much more deserving of plaudits... and I especially enjoyed La Dama y la Muerte. It may not have been anything extraordinary, but I found it the most enjoyable without a doubt...
I know I'm late to the party, but I completely agree, Keith. The headline you used for the post was my Facebook status moments after it won. It wasn't a great year - even the W&G was not as strong as his earlier efforts - but Logorama was the weakest of the bunch.
And I sincerely hope Mark was being ironic... ;0)
agreed!
jriggity
I am definitely of the opinion French Roast was a better film but I must admit I do like Logorama.
Probably because of how they incorporated all the logos and it wasn't anything like what I was expecting.
I also got a kick out of imagining the faces of the marketing execs that have seen their logos used in such a way.
It must drive an animation purist up the wall that they won, though.
Well said about Cordell Baker!
